Include your Vitamins to guarantee healthy eating

Healthy eating often comes attached to the notion of ‘losing weight’. Healthy eating isn’t about dieting and trying to shed those pounds, it’s about making sure you’re getting the right amount of nutrients to sustain your everyday life.

There is an obvious connection with losing weight, as the aim of healthy eating is cutting out saturated fats and high amounts of salt and sugar. This is why the NHS suggests you get your 5-a-day of fruit and vegetables. Whether this be green beans with your chicken, strawberries on your cereal or just an apple with your lunch. The aim is to eat a variety of fruit and vegetables as part of your 5-a-day. For example, 5 apples in one day isn’t the aim of the advice.

The 5-a-day approach encourages the intake of all those key vitamins and minerals. Vitamin C is important within the diet because it helps to protect cells and keep them in working order. It also helps to keep your organs in good health. Most vegetables and fruits that we eat contain vitamin C, however if you struggle to get your 5-a-day or aren’t keen and sure that you get enough vitamins on fruit and vegetables,  then supplements are the best way to ensure you don’t get scurvy (caused by a lack of vitamin C). You can get supplements for every vitamin and mineral, however be careful not to take over the recommended daily amount (RDA). It is best recommended to contact a doctor who has been schooled to guide your healthcare needs before taking any supplements.

Healthy eating also includes making sure you get balanced amounts of protein, carbohydrates and unsaturated fats. Fish is a great way to ensure you’re getting your protein along with essential fatty acids. However, also make sure you get carbohydrates, but opt for ‘brown’ versions. For example, brown bread, brown rice or brown pasta. This ensures that the wheat hasn’t been processed too much, but you’re still getting the energy you need.
One thing that you should bear in mind is that vitamins all work together, in order to keep your body healthy and to obtain good immunity. Calcium is needed for strong bones and teeth, if you lack consumption of calcium, then vitamin d is important, as vitamin d absorbs calcium for when it’s needed most. Vitamin e is vital for our body’s immunity, as vitamin e  protects our cell membranes.
